Dome tents are one of the most popular types of tent due to the fact that they are easy to put up and still very sturdy and so can easily withstand the general British weather.
There are however lots of different levels of dome tent with the cheap dome tents being basic but excellent for casual use and these cheap dome tents are also great for the kids. At the other end of the scale we have the professional dome tents that are designed for extreme weather on mountaineering expeditions and these can cost several hundred pounds but are not needed for most UK camping.
There are then the mid-range dome tents that cost around £100 and are the top quality, family dome tents. These are of a higher quality than the cheap tents and are larger and so can generally sleep around 4 people and they also often have a larger porch. They are also likely to last longer due to the higher quality and so are usually the best option if you would like the tent to last a decent amount of time.
If you are just buying for the kids then a cheap dome tent is great as they are likely to wreck it anyway over a few years and there are some very cheap deals available.
A dome tent is very easy to put up; you generally simply peg the ground sheet into the ground and then insert the poles which will raise and hold the inner tent in place. You then simply insert the porch pole and throw over the outer tent and peg that in place and then all you have to do is peg in the guide ropes and so you can easily have it up in just a few minutes when you get used to doing it.
